Mouse-art done in Paintshop Pro, cause I'm a peasant.
Long back story is long, skip to the end for the TLDR.

Dead Horse Pass AU – the story and all the characters reside in Dead Horse Pass, a small frontier town on the edge of the Equestrian Empire where the rule of law is relative and ponies need to be tough as nails to survive.

Mourning Dove is the third of four siblings and the only daughter of the only undertaker in Dead Horse Pass, her mother vanished when she was a filly and it was her who gave Mourning Dove the locket. Most ponies believed her dead, but Mourning Dove would come to know the truth...

At a young age Mourning Dove received her cutiemark – a calla lily and wing, symbolizing her gift with arranging flowers and how their almost angelic look brought happiness and levity to those who required her father's mortuary in their time of loss. It wasn't a big or powerful feat, but her sense of pride and joy in cheering up sad ponies with her flowers that gained her mark, she loved nothing more than to bring joy where there had been only sorrow. Now her colors are very pale, but that wasn't always the case. When she was a young adult Mourning Dove fell gravely ill, so much so that Remedy (ashesundown.deviantart.com/art… ) who had gained local fame since the manifestation of his talent, was summoned in a last effort to save the young mare. Mourning Dove was all but dead when the young stallion arrived, but after many hours he was able to vanquish Mourning Dove's illness, though it came at a terrible price. Her colors never fully returned, and her eyes somehow seemed...hollow. Morning Dove returned to her work, but within the week the mare began seeing strange things. Dark shadows cast across some ponies, some came swiftly, while others slowly grew until the whole pony went dark – and death always followed in the wake of shadow. Not knowing what else to do, she went to Remedy, if he could see monsters, she thought he might be the only one who could help. Unfortunately, the stallion could not offer any answers but instead directed her to his mother, Hymn Note (to be drawn.) The older faith healing mare recognized Mourning Dove's gift, and knowing the young mare had recently been saved from death's door only confirmed her diagnosis. “You see Death. You see the unavoidable end, my dear. When my son brought you back...some part of you must have stayed behind.” Hymn Note said, and that is where Mourning Dove's unwilling task began. Every day for many weeks Morning Dove returned to Hymn Note's cottage where the older mare instructed her in her gift and how to use it to benefit the ponies of Dead Horse Pass – it was her divine calling, she said, though to Mourning Dove it felt more like a curse. Skill wasn't the only thing Mourning Dove gained from these visits, Remedy was always there and the pair began to fall in love. Once she had gained all she could from Hymn Note, Mourning Dove ventured back to town where she used her premonitions of death to urge ponies to get their affairs in order, say their goodbyes, and on occasion talk some sense into Remedy, “You can't save this one, Remmy. Let them go.” Which put much tension on their already rocky relationship.  Her sense of death also told her something more, that her mother was not dead - she could not sense her on the other side. Torn between duty to her father's business, the responsibilities of her new gift, and the desire to find her mother, Mourning Dove was under a lot of stress and was often rather salty and sleep deprived, but she never failed to put on a brave and serene face when her gift was needed - never allowing her inner turmoil to affect ponies who needed her. Some of the townsponies called her the Angel of Death, a title she hated.

Although this is the fate that life handed her, Mourning Dove much preferred to arrange the flowers in her father's mortuary – there she could bring joy to sad ponies, rather than inform them of their coming misfortune and be the cause of their sadness.

TLDR – was saved by Remedy from near death, is pale because she never came fully back. Sees death premonitions, but would rather just arrange flowers because it makes her sad to cause ponies pain. Cutiemark for angelic flower arranging and the joy it brought sad ponies. Natural talent is bringing joy to the sorrowful, gift/curse causes her to be the source of sorrow - irony's a bitch. Remedy is her significant, or insignificant, other – it's rocky. Pretty much everything bad in her life in Remedy's fault.

not 100% on that cutie mark, but she's so friggin pale that it's invisible without an outline.
